      Green houses trap heat inside the atmosphere

      Slightly longer answer:
      When heat and light from the sun hit the earth it heats up the earth a bit, the rest is reflected back to space. Greenhouse gases reflect or absorb some of this so there is more opportunities for light/heat to warm up the earth.
