• Question: Is the popularity of BME a passing fad? And Is biomedical engineering really 'engineering' or is it better to study electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering?

I don’t think so. I can’t imagine a time when we will stop using technology to make people fitter, healthier, and happier. There are so many remaining problems to be solved, I expect this area to continue to grow for many years to come.
Most people working in biomedical engineering are trained in one or more of the areas you mention – I have a degree in electronic engineering.
However, someone with a biomedical engineering degree could also work as an electrical or mechanical engineer, for example.
