Well, the internet is a product that nearly everyone is using these days. Our world is becoming more digital. You have so much information (data) to store and send and play with. You want all of this data to be stored correctly, so that it can move faster when you need it.
Basically, I don’t want your videos to get buffered when you are watching them, especially those dog videos:)
So we need to store and move this data faster, if we use traditional methods such as electricity, well electrons are slow, these circuits are good for certain operations, but they need something to increase their speed, so we use light (or photons). So we have some circuits that carry this light , these are called photonic integrated circuits (google it!), these are used along with electrical circuits so that the data can move really fast. We have not achieved the speed of light yet, but we are at 400 Gigabit per second(a unit for data speed) right now because of different losses in the system. Maybe by the time you grow up, we can advance there:)
