The leaving cert in Vietnam, my home country, is called National High-School Graduation Examination. When I took this exam (more than 20 years ago), all the subjects were decided by the Ministry of Education, so students had no choice. The questions for each subject were different, depending on their choice as the future career: natural science or social science. Students made their choice when they took the high-school entrance exam. I chose natural science subject and 6 subjects were: Vietnamese, English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. After passing this exam, students also needed to sit for the national university entrance exam in about 2 months. I don’t like this system.

It’s different now. There are 3 mandatory subjects: Vietnamese, English, Maths. Students can choose another subject among Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography.
