For the research I want to do I have to do the following steps:
      1) Select a rock sample
      2) Describe the rock, like figure out what minerals it is made out of
      3) Figure out what part of the rock I want to know the age of
      4) Prepare the rock for chemistry (crush it to a powder)
      5) Dissolve the rock in acid
      6) Do some complicated chemistry experiments on them
      7) Analyze the results of the chemistry experiments on a scientific insturment (mass spectrometer)

That would usually take about 1 month of work.
