      Hi Jamie,
Hairs indeed come from specific cells. These cells are lay at the bottom of a small hole in the skin (called follicle) and form keratin (a protein that hairs are made of), the layers of keratin are added to the bottom of the hair (root) and the hair is slowly pushed/squeezed out – so it grows.
While hairs seem to be growing and growing there’s actually a limit to how long they can grow. Each hair on your head grows for about 2 to 6 years. After that, they fall out and replaced by new ones. People actually lose about 50-100 head hairs per day.
