      Hello,

This is a very difficult question, as consciousness is something that we don’t fully understand yet and it’s being created from many “layers”. To make it less complicated, I’d say that consciousness can be defined by how much you are realizing that you are you, that you are an individual with your own needs, personality, thoughts and you are able to separate them from the outer world. Also, that you are able to judge the situation happening in your environments and “calculate” impact which it can have on you. The aspect about life is a bit different in my opinion. Many animals for example are also alive but hey are not as conscious as we are. They are rather reacting with their instinct and don’t have a reflection about their inner life. With consciousness, you want to do something, you have dreams, want to achieve something etc. when life is only about surviving and passing genes (mainly).
