The rarest types of rocks are often found near volcanoes or volcanic activity. Some volcanoes produce types of minerals and rocks that are unique to them!

Other rare rocks are extremely old rocks, only a few areas in the world have rocks more than 3.5 billion years old (The earth is about 4.5 billion years old). This is because the earth usually recycles rocks so old rocks have to be lucky to not be eroded away or melted!
